Early Life Tree Seedling

Description

Using a specific file set up, it is possible to load both the Life Tree Seedling and the Digging Mitts into BiT. You can then load the Life Tree Seedling onto your file by starting it at the correct time.

This trick skips having to dig up the seedling normally, and allows you to grow the Tree of Life Fruit on your first visit through the Gate of Time. Thus, you can complete the Lanayru Song of the Hero part in one visit, rather than the standard two visits.

File Setup

To perform this trick, you need two different files:

  • File 1: should be saved with the Digging Mitts (or Mogma Mitts) obtained
  • File 2: should be saved in an area with one of two specific temporary flags set (temporary scene flags 8x02 or 8x04)

These temporary flags correspond to:

  • In Faron Woods, bonking the tree to the right of the Skyview Temple stairs as you're facing the front of the temple.
  • In Skyview Temple, by either shooting a seed at the center of the spiral pattern on the wall right as you first enter the dungeon, or by defeating the Stalfos to obtain the Beetle.
  • In Eldin Volcano, by either digging right next to the burrow spot in the Thrill Digger Cave, or by digging the spot closest to the center of the room when diving inside the digging mitts cave.
  • In Earth Temple, by entering the last room of the dungeon with the slope sections and taking a few steps forward. You do not need to do anything else.
  • In Lanayru Desert, by either bonking the Main Node or the Fire Node. In both cases a rupee will be revealed.
  • In Lanayru Mining Facility, by either breaking the pot containing bombs at the north-west side of the room with 2 Staldras, or by defeating the east Staldra in that same room.
  • In the Sand Sea, by bonking into the sign on your left as you enter inside the Shipyard Construction Bay building to reveal a rupee.
  • In the Sandship, by blowing the gust bellows at a lamp hanging at the ceiling in one of the generator rooms to reveal a rupee.
  • In the Volcano Summit, by digging in either hole in the Waterfall area.
  • In the Fire Sanctuary, by breaking either pots in the room you are handed the map, after giving water to the frog.
  • In the Sealed Grounds, by simply talking to the Goron at various points in the game.

These are currently all the known spots, but it is likely that more exist and haven't been found yet.

Note: Temporary flags unset when leaving the general area. For exemple, if you bonk the needed tree in Deep Woods, then enter Skyview Temple and then go back to the Deep Woods, you will not have the flag anymore and will need to bonk the tree again. However, after bonking the tree in Deep Woods, entering Faron Woods and then going back to Deep Woods, you will still have the flag, because Faron Woods and Deep Woods share the same array for flags in memory, and thus are considered to be the same general area.

How To

Begin by activating BiT. The core of the trick is then the following:

  • With File 1 selected, collect a Stamina Fruit (this loads the digging mitts into BiT)
  • Select File 2 and update a flag to perform BiTMagic. This is usually done by either bonking a tree with file 2 or checking a statue with file 2 (Note: if file 2 is saved in Deep Woods then you only need to select it)
  • Look towards the pumpkin patch. Depending on what exactly your temporary flag is you will need to look at the Village pumpkin patch or the Bazaar pumpkin patch. Fi will pop up with a textbox.
  • Clear Fi's textbox. You will be teleported to the pumpkin patch with the Life Tree Seedling buried in front of you.
  • Select File 1 and dig up the Life Tree Seedling at the same time.
  • Clear the seedling textbox and Start file 1 at the same time.
  • Optional: Mash the A button while the File loads to dig up the seedling again.**

If done correctly, you will restart where you activated BiT. It will not look like you have the seedling (unless you did the optional step), but if you try to plant it at a planting spot you will succeed.

Uses

In speedruns, Early Life Tree Seedling is often combined with a BiTSave, meaning your file will start in BiT Skyloft after the trick is performed. The steps for the trick depend on which statue you'll use:

Route for Upper Academy Statue

  • Activate BiT outside the Isle of Songs after obtaining Farore's Courage.
  • In BiT, select File 2 to open the academy gate with BiTMagic.
  • Cancel File 2 while running towards the Upper Academy gate.
  • After passing through the gate, select File 1 and obtain the nearby Stamina Fruit to load the Digging Mitts.
  • With File 1 selected, save at the Upper Academy statue. DO NOT START. This is the BiTSave.
  • While the save is happening, cancel File 1 and select File 2 to reopen the gate, then run back down the stairs towards the bazaar.
  • Turn left at the bazaar. This brings the pumpkin patch into view and triggers Fi.
  • Clear Fi's textbox and cancel File 2 at the same time.
  • After teleporting, select File 1 and dig up the Life Tree Seedling at the same time.
  • Clear the seedling textbox and Start file 1 at the same time.
  • Optional: Mash the A button while the File loads to dig up the seedling again.**

Route for Bazaar Statue

  • Activate BiT outside the Isle of Songs after obtaining Farore's Courage.
  • In BiT, select File 1. Run down the stairs and collect the Stamina Fruit to load the Digging Mitts.
  • Cancel File 1 and the textbox at the same time.
  • Continue to the Bazaar statue and save with File 1 selected. DO NOT START. This is the BiTSave.
  • While the save is happening, cancel File 1 and select File 2.
  • Fi will trigger (you may need to run towards the river a little). Clear Fi's textbox and cancel File 2 at the same time.
  • After teleporting, select File 1 and dig up the Life Tree Seedling at the same time.
  • Clear the seedling textbox and Start file 1 at the same time.
  • Optional: Mash the A button while the File loads to dig up the seedling again.**

Which Statue to Use?

If your next goal is to enter the Goddess Statue, then the Upper Academy statue is about 1-2 seconds faster than using the Bazaar statue on the Japanese Version. On English, however, the lag and longer textboxes mean that the Bazaar statue is about 1 second faster. In 100% runs, the Bazaar statue would be used regardless, since the next task is to enter the Bazaar.

**Mashing the A button at the end causes the Life Tree Seedling to properly show in your inventory. If you omit this step, the seedling will not appear in your inventory even though you have it.
