Fire Sanctuary

Mogma Mitts Skip

Discovered by AceZephyr

The Mogma Mitts can be skipped using Reverse BiTMagic to set two different flags in Fire Sanctuary. The first flag opens the bars in front of the Boss Key Chest, while the second flag corresponds to the moldorm being defeated, which when set prevents the game from closing those bars again upon entering that room.

The corresponding flags are 4x40 and 4x80. On Skyloft they are set when visiting the Lower Academy statue and visiting the Bazaar statue. These can be done with no special file setup. One warning: do not visit the statue too early, or the RBM will fail.

Early Boss Key

Method 1

Discovered by Claris, BiTWarp by ZFG

After obtaining the Mogma Mitts (or doing the Mogma Mitts skip), save at the first statue in Fire Sanctuary. Activate BiT and BiTWarp using the Upper Academy statue. The room you end up in will be partially loaded, and you must first reload it by going in and out of the door below or behind you.

To reach the other side, first do a manual jump to get on the right wall. To get around the pillar, you will do a forward jump followed by a jump slash. This angle is precise. To get the correct angle, while holding Z, slowly angle the control stick until Link's feet are in-place walking forward, and Link should not be drifting to the left at all. Because of the round shape of the pillar, the forward jump will push Link to the right and the jump slash will bring him back to the left.

Once on the other side, move to the left side of the bridge and jump down to the passageway in the statue's mouth. From there you can play through normally to the Boss Key.

Faster Room Reloading

Discovered by gymnast86

After the BiTWarp, you can reload with the door behind you in a faster maneur if your position was specific. The fastest method is to carefully position yourself while executing the BiTWarp in Skyloft; with the correct positioning, you'll fall through the upper platform and land on the door sill, allowing you to immediately open the door. You then still must do the pillar jump above to get across the gap, but you can immediately jump to the shining platform after that.

Method 2 - With Early Bottle

Discovered by peppernicus, BiTWarp by ZFG

Save at the first statue in the Fire Sanctuary (important because you will want to go in unloaded rooms. Activate BiT and BiTWarp using the Upper Academy statue.

Once on the other side, open the door in the middle to end up in the unloaded map room. Perform one front hop followed by 5 sidehops right. Then line yourself up so that a sidehop will land you in the first magmanos room, right next to a door. Open that door to go outside and get the bottle.

Once the bottle obtained, hold Z to keep the angle from the bottle chest, then go in the left corner in front of the wall. Neither the wall nor the fence is solid, so you can perform a left sidehop to land in the mouth of the sleeping one and continue straight to the boss key.

Method 3 - Door Diving

Discovered by azer67

If you only have 2 hearts and don't have the sailcloth, you cannot just jump into the mouth, you will take too much damage. Instead, enter the room above the mouth. Once in the unloaded room, go inside the door and face away from the void, while standing as close to possible to it. Open the door while facing away from the door so that you can open it and dive at the same time. This should put you down on the mouth without any damage taken.

This method is extremely precise: you must be as close to the void as possible to open the door on the wrong side. The X position needed is precise to 0.01 units.

Early Overworld Statue

The statue in front of the boss door that can be accessed from the overworld can be obtained early using Reverse BiTMagic. This is usually combined with the RBM to access the Boss Key Room from behind to skip the Clawshots in the Fire Sanctuary.

Video forthcoming

The corresponding flag is Fx04. On Skyloft it is obtaining the gratitude crystal inside Orielle and Parrow's house, which can be done with any file that has the ability to collect gratitude crystals.

Access Boss Key Room From Behind

When using the Early Overworld Statue trick above, the gates leading to the Boss Key room would normally be closed. They can be opened using Reverse BiTMagic to enable reaching the Boss Key from the statue, which allows to beat the Fire Sanctuary without Clawshots.

Video forthcoming

The corresponding flag is 7x02. On Skyloft it is set when visiting the Upper Academy statue, which can be done without any special file setup.

Moldorm Strategy

In general, the Moldorm fight is fairly random; he will turn and pause in random places. There's a best fight that should be strived for:

  • Get the first hit as Moldorm turns towards the far wall on the right.
  • Duck up briefly, then go straight right and hope Moldorm goes straight along the far right wall. Hit him again.
  • Back up as Moldorm circles around and bait an attack, backing out of the way; hope Moldorm doesn't follow you.
  • Get the last hit.

If Moldorm turns the wrong way during the above strategy, he'll be right on top of you. Try to back away and hope he turns off, allowing you to get the second hit in.

If that goes wrong, the general strategy is to never chase Moldorm. Let him come to you, and try to bait attacks and dodge them. In his last phase, Moldorm will charge you and charge in a straight line until he hits a wall and is stunned. If you can bait him and dodge him, that should give you enough time to defeat him.

This fight is skipped when using Mogma Mitts skip.

Early Plats HP

Chest RBM

Using the Reverse BiTMagic technique, it is possible to make the heart piece chest appear in the Fire Sanctuary before meeting Plats. This skips the section with Plats and allows for delaying the mogma mitts until Bokoblin Base in 100% speedruns.

Video forthcoming

The corresponding flag for making the chest appear is 5x80. On Skyloft it is set when talking to Flegde in the Knight's Academy before meeting Zelda.

Plats Teleport RBM

Using the Reverse BiTMagic technique, it is possible to trigger the cutscene where Plats digs up the heart piece chest early. The cutscene will teleport as soon as you enter the main room. If you enter the main room with a BiTWarp, you will have to reload first before you can teleport to the chest.

The corresponding flag is 5x01. On Skyloft it is set when obtaining the heart piece in Zelda's cabinet. This requires either using BiTMagic to set 5x04 to unlock her door or loading the clawshots in Back in Time.

Boss Key Skip

This is usually used in conjunction with Early Boss Rush

It is possible to use Reverse BiTMagic to open the boss door in Fire Sanctuary, thereby skipping the Mysterious Crystals, which means skipping the Moldorm fight and the Mogma Mitts requirements in Fire Sanctuary, and enabling the Ghirahim 2 fight early. This RBM is slower than getting the boss key normally, and is about the same speed as performing Mogma Mitts Skip, and has a lot of requirements to even be possible to perform. However it is useful in 100% speedruns that have done Early Boss Rush, because the Imprisoned 1 rematch in Boss Rush sets the Fire Sanctuary dungeon as being completed. When a dungeon is completed, it is not possible to put the boss key into the key hole, thus this trick comes into play.

This RBM employs Faron BiT. The corresponding flag is 6x20. In the Sealed Grounds it is set after drawing a rupee specifically on the goddess wall, and starting the file on the 2nd goron textbox after a successful drawing. This requires entering Behind the Temple with a file that has unlocked Goddess Walls by talking to the first Mogma inside Skyview 2, having the inventory flag for the ballad of the goddess loaded before entering Behind the Temple and generally by using BiTMagic to set temporary flag 1x80 to guarantee the rupee drawing. A file saved on Skyloft luckily almost always has that temporary flag.

Guld Skip

Discovered by Deesh

By jumping off the platform with the key in the first room and doing a precise jumpslash afterwards you can skip talking to the old mogma and can go directly to the next room.

Lava River Timesaver

In the first lava river room after the Dark Lizalfos, it is possible to skip flying the Hook Beetle to grab a bomb flower, by instead placing your own bomb and using precise Hook Beetle flying to reach the rocks blocking the lava spout, destroying them.

This trick is fairly precise; you need the Beetle to be flying upward as little as possible while still clearing the fence, and the bomb needs to be placed as close to the fence as possible while still allowing the Hook Beetle to clear it.

Water Plant Jumpslash Trick

In the two level room with the water plants and frog statue, it is possible to avoid going to the second level. Get a water plant on your sword, run to the area below the frog statue, and do a front hop jumpslash. The water plant should shatter on the frog statue, triggering it and lowering the fire wall.

Double Magmanos Strategy

Consistent Double Kill

Discovered by Tenderhearted

When you fight the two Magmanos before the Mogma Mitts, there is a consistent strategy to kill both with a single water plant. At the beginning of the fight, run straight across the room to the platform and grab the water plant at the top. Then drop down and stand next to the platform. Right before the Magmanos attack, take a couple steps backwards towards the wall. One Magmanos should raise the platform while the second should emerge right next to the first. You can then hit both with the water plant and destroy them with spin attacks.

Mogma Cutscene Skip

Discovered by keitsu23

After defeating the Magmanos, there is typically a cutscene where the hanging Mogma congratulates you on your victory and asks you to get him down. This cutscene can be skipped by calling Fi as the fight ends; the timing is lenient. If the skip works, you will see the lava in the room lower while you are speaking to Fi.

Which Fi textbox you get affects how much time you will save; Fi's low battery message trumps all others, and is actually the best (or tied for the best) option. Fi's standard message is the next best option, and last is Fi's low on hearts message. For the last, you have a chance of getting Heart Dowsing, which would end up losing time to the cutscene (though this seems to occur rarely, if ever).

Ghirahim 2 Strategy

Phase 1

The strategy here is the same as in the first Ghirahim fight, but can be done in three cycles as follows:

  • Spin attack, slash
  • Spin attack, slash
  • Two spin attacks

Using a vertical spin attack for the last one causes him to backflip to the second phase faster.

Phase 2

Ghirahim has multiple attacks during this phase, and he attacks in an unpredictable pattern.

Straight Attack

Ghirahim will attack you with both swords without warning. You can shield bash and do a horizontal slash to cancel it. This won't damage him, but it is faster than backflipping to dodge. He will sometimes continue into the Leaping Strike.

Feint Attack

Ghirahim will do nothing at first but suddenly attacks without warning. He is vulnerable right before attacking, so if you can recognize this attack coming you can preempt his attack.

Imminent Attack

Ghirahim will walk towards you while blocking in two directions. This is the best attack to get, as you can immediately attack his open area and get in a few slashes. In this attack, his stun length is always short, so five slashes is the most you can get (see below).

Sword Lick

Ghirahim will walk towards you while licking his sword. He will block your first two attacks, but then he is vulnerable. One method to deal with this attack is:

  • Slash up (blocked)
  • Slash down (blocked)
  • Left-to-right spin attack (hits)
  • Slash a few times to follow up.

Dart Circle

Ghirahim will summon a horizontal circle or vertical semicircle of darts around you. Do the appropriate spin attack to send all the darts flying back at him; this does a small amount of damage. While it seems like you can hit him while he summons the darts, this doesn't actually do any damage.

Triple Dart Attack

Ghirahim will summon a circle of darts around himself and fire them at you in three sets of five. There are two ways to deal with this attack. The first method is to slash each set of five as it appears to cancel the attack; this does not leave Ghirahim vulnerable and is slow. The second way is to get close to Ghirahim and keep doing horizontal slashes. This will sometimes cause him to transition into a Leaping Strike. If you hit him after that attack it will despawn Ghirahim's darts.

Similar to the Dart Circle, it seems like you can hit him when he summons these darts, but it actually doesn't deal any damage.

Leaping Strike

Ghirahim will leap into the air, and after a second or two land with both swords down where you are standing. After he lands, he is vulnerable while he pulls his swords out of the ground. You can dodge this attack by just backflipping once while he is in midair, then slashing him as he recovers.

Stun Length

It is NOT possible to stunlock Ghirahim; this is false information. Instead, his stun length varies with his health and whether or not he used Imminent Attack. The Imminent Attack always sets the stun length to its shortest, at 5 hits maximum. For any other attack (Feint Attack, Sword Lick, or Leaping Strike), if he has most of his HP left, the stun length is longer (around 8 slashes or so). Once his HP is lower (around 2/3 HP left), the stun length is always short. So the only time the longer stun length occurs is if he uses Feint Attack, Sword Lick, or Leaping Strike in the first or second cycles.

Unused or TAS Strategies

Skip Waterplant Cutscene

At the start of the Fire Sanctuary, it is possible to skip the cutscene showing the waterplant falling into and solidifying the lava by talking to the bird statue at the same time the cutscene would occur.

This strat is probably slower in an RTA format, but may be slightly faster for a TAS.

Skip The First Circular Room

Discovered by CloudMax

This method is slower than playing this section normally.

Save at the bird statue when you reach the first outdoor area. Activate BiT and BiTWarp using the Lower Academy statue. Link will appear in a partially loaded room; to reload, exit through the door on the left.

You'll need to defeat the Dark Lizalfos; however, since you haven't triggered the Dark Lizalfos cutscene, he is stuck in a wait state. If you try to hit him then he will keep teleporting back to his initial state, making him invincible. To kill him, stun him with the Gust Bellows or the Whip, then use a spin attack and final blow. Then continue through the door that opened.

Early Bottle with RBM

Using Reverse BiTMagic, it is possible to open the gate that normally bars the water plant in the first circular room. This allows you to kill that Magmanos on the first trip and get the Empty Bottle immediately, without having to backtrack with Mogma Mitts.

Video Forthcoming

The corrsponding flag is 0x04. This was useful in 100% speedruns for delaying the Mogma Mitts until Bokoblin Base until it was found you could get the bottle early with a BiTWarp.

Itemless Strategy

Discovered by peppernicus

With the discovery of Reverse BiTMagic, it quickly became apparent that no item needed to be used to beat the Fire Sanctuary in appearence. By combining the Mogma Mitts Skip, accessing the boss key room from behind and the various tricks to get to the Overworld Boss Door Statue, no item seemed to be needed.

That's not completely true however: there is one roadblock that needed an item to solve. In the first room, it is impossible to commit a single RBM with no B-item. But there is a solution: perform a Lower Academy Statue BiTWarp and open the door to go Outside. Go very close to the door on the other side. The door doesn't have collision, so you can sidehop and void in the lava. If you sidehopped far enough, you can load the collision for the first Magmanos room. From there it is possible to save at the Bird Statue. Then perform a RBM of your choice, and commit it by checking the first Outside bird statue.

This has no real uses currently other than being an obscure trick for challenge categories.
